Omega Launches Four New Slim "Dark Side of the Moon" Speedmasters Available in Black and Grey Houston, we have four new Omega Speedmasters worth checking out! The three "Dark Side of the Moon" models may look familiar at first glance, available in deep white, deep black, and deep red, but the new "Grey Side of the Moon" model will undoubtedly stand out. However, all four models incorporate significant evolutions and improvements. Let's take a look at each one.
Everyone knows the Speedmaster. Normally, that's quite presumptuous, and certainly some haven't discovered this iconic chronograph, but in the post-Moonwatch era, it has a decades-long history with NASA and space exploration, and has long been a favorite among watch collectors. It's safe to say it's one of the most recognizable watches in the world. But then again, the Speedmaster collection is quite extensive. The most familiar model is the Professional Moonwatch, but there are now over 20 configurations in this field. For the entire Speedmaster collection, there are over 100 variations to explore on the Omega website, when you consider its Heritage section, Speedmaster 38 section, dual-counter section, and so on.
So, with so many options, it's understandable that you might not be familiar with every single one. Besides the OG Moonwatch, one of the most popular collections is the Dark Side of the Moon, which began 12 years ago in 2013, a momentous occasion with the introduction of the first Speedmaster with an all-ceramic case. Since then, the Dark Side of the Moon has evolved from a single model into a full-fledged segment with a variety of "Moonside" configurations. However, today, the collection has evolved further, with the introduction of three new Dark Side of the Moon models and a new Grey Side of the Moon model, as I mentioned earlier. But let's start with the Dark Side of the Moon trio.
The New Dark Side of the Moon 2025 Collection
All Dark Side of the Moon watches feature a black ceramic case that is water-resistant to 50 meters, but with slightly different finishes. The case diameter remains at 44.25mm, but the lug-to-lug distance has increased by 0.2mm to 50mm. However, the most noticeable improvement to these watch cases is their thickness.

The two automatic versions, the all-black Deep Black and Deep White, are now slightly thinner by just over a millimeter, at 15.09mm.
I call this remake of the original Dark Side of the Moon Deep White because the Liquidmetal tachymeter scale, lume, and most of the dial text are all white.
The second automatic watch, the Dark-Dark collection, as the name suggests, incorporates all of these elements into a darker hue. While these elements may feel familiar, the dials are not identical, instead adopting a more vintage-inspired pie-pan construction—a raised center plate with an outer rim that slopes downward. The Dark-White collection features a new, two-layered ceramic dial construction with a laser-brushed finish.
The dark models feature a slightly glossy black dial with a laser-blasted finish. Both dials feature a matching date display at 6 o'clock, along with chronograph counters at 9 and 3 o'clock. The left counter displays small seconds, while the right counter displays elapsed hours and minutes, both cleverly nestled within the same counter.
The internals of these watches have also evolved, jumping from caliber 9300 to caliber 9900, making these two more familiar models METAS Master Chronometer certified for the first time. The rest of the construction remains the same, with a column wheel and a 60-hour power reserve. However, it's worth noting that, unlike its predecessor, the all-black version now features darker bridges to better blend in with the all-black ambiance.
Completing the new "Dark Side of the Moon" trilogy is the Deep Red model, whose dial blends deep white with all-black elements. The dial is the same deep black with a touch of red as the Deep White model, but the top of the dial also features the same sandblasted finish as the Deep Black model, and the hands and luminous material are also black.
All three models are available with a new black rubber strap featuring a new lunar texture on the underside. The two automatic models offer a unique black nylon strap. Both straps feature a folding clasp that matches the case for a comfortable fit.
Gray Side of the Moon Apollo 8
Fans of the Apollo 8 "Dark Side of the Moon" watch will delight in the new "Gray Side of the Moon" watch. This watch, also a tribute to Apollo 8, features a gray-gray exterior inspired by Jim Lovell's historic observation during the Apollo 8 mission that the Moon is essentially gray. Like the "Dark Side of the Moon" Apollo 8 watch, this watch features a laser-ablated lunar surface pattern on both the front and back of the movement. The near side of the Moon is clearly visible through the skeletonized gray dial, while the far side is visible through the caseback.
This new "Gray Side of the Moon" watch, with its gray ceramic case, shares the same 44.25mm diameter and 50mm lug-to-lug spacing as the new "Dark Side of the Moon" watch, yet it is the thinnest of the four watches, measuring just 12.97mm thick. This is thanks to the Master Chronometer Caliber 3869, certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), the same 50-hour manual-winding movement found in the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch.
Compared to the "Dark Side of the Moon" collection, this watch's dial has lost its date display, replaced by three dedicated counters showing the small seconds, hours, and minutes, from left to right. This also means that the new "Gray Side of the Moon" collection lacks the time zone adjustment feature found in the 9-series movement in the "Dark Side of the Moon" collection, which allows the hour hand to be adjusted independently without interrupting the movement's timing.
As for the strap options for this new "Gray Side of the Moon" watch,
Ultimately, one half of this new collection, the two black ceramic automatic calibers, are more subtle improvements with significant impact—such as finally enabling the original "Dark Side of the Moon" design to receive METAS certification for the first time in its twelve-year history.
Importantly, the Dark Side of the Moon Manual-Wound Crimson offers a manual-wound evolution with a black ceramic case and black dial that shares the same modern aesthetic, but with a much thinner case, while the Apollo 8 in Gray brings a new dimension to its design, and many will appreciate its lunar laser ablation.
Of all the models, I think I'd choose the manual-wound Dark Side of the Moon in Crimson, as I had the pleasure of wearing the original Dark Side of the Moon design while visiting NASA in Houston with Omega, and I personally love its look, but I'd happily trade the automatic for a few millimeters thinner case. |
